Vivian was born February 5, 1918 in Macksville, Kansas the last of 11 children of Henry F. Bates and Mary Etta (Keller) Bates. She lived and attended school in Macksville. On August 25, 1934 at Kinsley, Kansas she married Edgar Rex Hager. In the late 1930s she moved to Fruitland, Idaho and from there moved to Eastern Oregon where she worked with her young son, Leonard doing farm work, with cattle, in gardens and orchards. In fall 1949 she moved to Glendale where she lived until her husbands death in March 1997 and she moved into foster care.

She served as a chaplain in the Rebecca Lodge in Glendale for many years. She also attended the Glendale Assembly of God Church.

Vivian enjoyed her cats and dogs. She loved music – singing, playing the guitar and harmonica and taught her children music. She always looked for things she could do for others and make things better in life. She was a wonderful caring, gracious lady and was loved by all that had the pleasure of knowing her. Nothing bad could ever be said of Vivian.

Survivors include three sons and their spouses, Leonard R. Hager of Rogue River; Larry D. Hager of Hoodsport, Washington; and Roy A. Hager of Wilderville; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Rex Hager in 1997; a granddaughter, Trinity Hager in 1993; and two grandsons, Scott B. Lanham in 1994 and Billy Ray Hager in 2005.
