Susan “Susie” Carpenter passed away peacefully on December 19, 2020. Born in Chicago, Illinois on August 5, 1944, Susie was preceded in death by her parents, Beatrice Bamford and John Churchill Austin, and her beloved uncle, Art Bamford of Bronxville, New York.
Susie thrived during her life through a variety of careers, from high school educator to working in the apparel manufacturing industry. Her passion for reading, writing, fine arts performances, and proximity to family friends led her to spend four years in Sarasota, Florida followed by four years in Medford, Oregon. She participated in her expanding faith in the Episcopal tradition through her relationships with The Church of the Redeemer, Sarasota, St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, Shady Cove, Trinity Church, Ashland, and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Portland.
Completing master’s degrees at Dartmouth College (MALS, 1974), and Marylhurst University (M.Div., 2008; MLS, 2010) Susie remained a devoted student of meditation and spirituality. She also served as a caring Spiritual Mentor. Her love of studying religious traditions, literature, and all things “Snoopy” were constant. She considered herself blessed to share so much time with cherished family and friends.
Susie is survived by her sister, Joan Austin Harrell, her nephews Tyler LaGrange, Kevin Harrell, and their respective families, in addition to half a dozen God nieces and nephews. Information regarding services will be forthcoming.
