Sterling Clarence "Sarge" Deveney

Sterling Clarence “Sarge” Deveney, age 82, of Grants Pass, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at his home.

No services are planned. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

He was born March 6, 1927 in Mount Wolf, Pennsylvania to Clarence Henry “Dudley” Deveney & Lilly Marie Deveney. He grew up on Ridge Avenue in York, Pennsylvania. During World War II and the Korean War, he served his country in the United States Army in the European Theater earning Four Bronze Stars, Combat Infantry Badge, UN Service Medal and Victory Medal. Sarge was honorably discharged with the rank of Master Sergeant from Fort Ord, California in July 1953. He previously resided in Santa Cruz, California and Marana, Arizona.

Survivors include seven children, Pamela Jean Miller of Grants Pass, Shona Michelle Doty of Portland, Craig Allen Deveney of Caldwell, Idaho, Melissa Ann Brown of Grants Pass, Sterling Cameron Deveney of Windsor, Pennsylvania, Jason Patrick Deveney of York, Pennsylvania and Taryn Leigh Deveney of Marana, Arizona; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Shona Sharon Bosserman of Dover, Pennsylvania; and a nephew, Marlin S. Krebs of Los Gatos, California.

Sarge was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Henry “Dudley” Deveney; his mother, Lilly Marie Deveney; a son, Donald Swafford; two sisters, Charlotte Krebs and Alma Melhone; and a brother, Charles Louis Deveney.
