Sara D. “Sally” Skandera, age 92, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at her home.
Funeral services have been held. Private interment was at Eagle Point National Cemetery.
Hull & Hull Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements.
Sara was born February 3, 1919 in Fornfelt, Missouri to Harry & Julia Gaddy. At birth she weighed just over four pounds so they kept her warm in a shoebox on the oven door of the wood cook stove. Sara grew up in Olney, Illinois until her father died when she was 14 years old. She and her mother moved many times during her high school years, ending with her graduation from Los Angeles High School in the late 1930’s. She went on to Pepperdine College where she met and married her husband Frank after he returned from serving in the United States Navy during World War II. Sara taught Home Economics at The Dalles High School for over 20 years before retiring to Grants Pass in the late 70’s.
She was a member of Church of Christ, Delta Kappa Gamma and Small Woodlands Association (aka Forest Farm Association).
Her hobbies included flower gardening, cooking, china painting, furniture refinishing and sewing.
Survivors include a son, Harry Lee Skandera of Santa Rosa, California; a daughter, Julia S. Morehouse of Grants Pass; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Frank Skandera, parents, Harry & Julia Gaddy; two sisters, Mae T. Carter and Mary Schmidt and two brothers Carl Gaddy and Vivian Gaddy.
