Rolf J. Sommer, 83, died Monday, December 10th, 2012 in Canby, Oregon from complications of a lengthy disease.

Rolf was born June 9th, 1929 in Oldenburg, Germany. He married Liesel Shurmann in Germany on May 2, 1952 and later that year immigrated directly to Grants Pass. The majority of his life he lived in a home he built in Grants Pass with his wife and four children. He started a building construction company and built many fine homes in the area.

In 1990, Rolf and his wife built a scenic cabin on the Illinois River and lived there until 1997. He built their 3rd home in Wilderville overlooking the Applegate River.

He is survived by his four children, Rudolf (wife Ann) Canby, Or; Harold, Redding, CA; Dolores (husband Harry) Lake Forest, CA; and Barbara, Roseburg, OR, his brother Gerald(wife Nancy) of Grants Pass, and his sister Helga from Germany. He has 6 grandchildren: Kurtis, Luke, Rachel, Karl, Richard & Kristen and many nieces and nephews in the United States and Germany. He is preceded in death by his wife Liesel, sister Lore, and his grandson Kevin.

Rolf was a lifetime member of the Elks and Eagles Club. He was one of three families that started both adult and youth soccer teams in Grants Pass in 1966. Throughout his life he loved his family, the outdoors, music, dancing, and traveling. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.

A Celebration of Life will be at 11:30am, Saturday, December 29th, 2012, at Hull and Hull Funeral Directors. Private interment will be at the Wilderville Cemetery. Hull and Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of the arrangements.
