Roger Steven Eckert

Roger Steven Eckert, age 75, of Grants Pass, died June 24, 2020 at his home.

Roger was born September 29, 1944 in Burbank, California to Herbert & Margaret Eckert. Roger served in the United States Navy. He worked for L.A. Gauge Company in Sun Valley, California for 25 years, and as an inspector for the Space Shuttle Program. After his retirement, Roger was a Walmart greeter for three years. In April 2003 he moved from Chatsworth, California to Grants Pass where he was a member of First Christian Church and served as a deacon and elder.

Baseball was a lifelong love of Roger’s. His grandfather was the Commissioner of Major League Baseball in the 1950’s. Roger played and coached for his high school and college teams in the San Fernando Valley.

Roger’s inordinate talent was in configuring miniatures. He could walk around a building once, not take a note, and go home and build it to scale with not even a model to work from. His mind worked in detail. One of his train club buddies said Roger was the #12 ranked Craftsman in the World.

Sharing some of his miniature scenes at the Josephine County Fair always brought a Blue Ribbon. The complete reenactment of the Alamo was a monumental task. Comprehending the patience and steadiness of his talent is indescribable.

You can also not mention Roger without saying “Poker,” a game he loved and played well. He also loved to go to Seven Feathers for some “fun” time. Always with candy and a joke to share, Roger was easy to love.

He is survived by his sister Donna Darnell of Grants Pass.

A memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m., July 9, 2020 at First Christian Church with Pastor Wes Winn officiating. Private inurnment will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery.
