It is with great sadness that the family of Robert Martin Benson of Grants Pass, Oregon announces his passing at his home on June 16, 2018 at the age of 72.
Born in New York on September 30, 1945 to Coast Guard veteran Harry A. Benson Sr. and Gloria M. Benson, “Bob” began his career in 1965 and went on to proudly serve PG&E and Pacific Power and Light for over 40 years.
As a sportsman, he had a lifelong passion for rafting, hunting and Raider football. Also, if it could be assembled he could build it, if it was broken he could fix it, if it swam he could catch it, and if it was edible he could barbecue it!
Being a skilled angler, he was as comfortable piloting a vessel on the open ocean off the coast of Oregon as he was navigating a jet boat along the Klamath and Rogue rivers. Bob could tie a fly with his eyes closed, and the salmon and steelhead of Oregon can now rest easier.
Fearless when faced with peril, he was the guy who would run in when everyone else was running out, and most people have a “Bob saving the day” story. He knew many great adventures over his life —from saving a runaway RV filled with family that lost its breaks on a steep winding road or putting out a boat fire in shark infested waters to single handily stopping a wild fire traveling down power lines—and he graced all who knew him with his kind and gentle style.
Bob Benson will be missed and remembered by his wife of 34 years Linda, his children Amber & Robert, his grandchildren Ella, Christopher & Nicole. Bob was predeceased by his brother, Harry Benson Jr.
A funeral service will take place on July 6, 2018 at 11:00 am at Hull and Hull Funeral Home (612 NW “A” Street, Grants Pass.)
