Robert Ashmead, age 96, of Grants Pass, died March 20, 2021 at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center.
Robert was born July 5, 1924 to Earl and Lola Ashmead in Las Animas, Colorado.
Robert was drafted into the United States Navy as a senior in high school. After boot camp he immediately went to sea during World War II as a gunner, helping guard Merchant Marine Vessels for over two years on the USS Quick and other ships while traveling over 33,000 miles in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He saw many different parts of the world in his Navy service. At the end of the of the war, he and his fellow sailors celebrated the end of the hostilities.
After leaving the Navy in 1945, Robert returned to Iowa to finish high school and earn his diploma, using the GI Bill to obtain his pilot’s license. Robert was a commercial truck driver, retiring in 1986.
He was a proud member of the Eagles Club (72 years) and the Elk’s Club (68 years).
Robert is preceded in death by his siblings. He leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Alice Ashmead of Grants Pass; his son Robert Ashmead Jr. of Grants Pass; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 26, 2021 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors.
A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 26, 2021 at Hillcrest Memorial Park- Grants Pass.
