Robert C. “Bob” Land, died at his home in Grants Pass on Saturday January 18, 2020. He was 88.
Bob was born October 13, 1931 in Eagle Butte, South Dakota to Cornelius and Bess Land. His father died when he was an infant. He was raised on a ranch for the first year, then his family moved to Faith, South Dakota before traveling to California at the age of 11 with his mother and sister LaVonne.
After graduating from L.A. High School in 1950, he joined the U.S. Air Force the following year, where he served in the Korean War in 1952. He met his future wife, Jean, in L.A., and after his return from Korea, they were married in L.A. in 1953. After being station in Tucson, Arizona for 2 years, they returned to L.A. in 1955. Bob attended Biola University and graduated in 1960 and then began teaching.
They had 3 children Susan Land, Deborah Land Ladd (Greg), and David Land who died shortly after birth.
He was a beloved school teacher in the Norwalk-LaMirada School District for 34 years in Southern California.
After retiring he moved to Grants Pass, Oregon in 1999 where he lived with his wife Jean for 20 years. They were married for 66 years.
He enjoyed playing card games, doing jigsaw puzzles and crossword puzzles. He enjoyed music and was a song leader in the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Santa Ana for many years. He enjoyed singing in the church choir, serving as a deacon and church janitor. He served on the church board and was Sunday School Superintendent. He also belonged to The Gleaners Jail Team ministry and to the Gideons, where he served as President for 3 years. He attended the Neighborhood Church in Grants Pass before it closed.
He is survived by his wife Jean; daughters Susan and Deborah (Greg) Ladd; and his grandsons Stefan, Brandon and Jared of Frisco, Texas.
Bob went to his Heavenly Home January 18, 2020. He died at his home with his wife and daughter Susan, who is an RN, and took care of him 24/7 for the last 3 ½ years when he was unable to walk and suffered from Parkinson’s Disease. He will be remembered and very much missed by his family and friends.
His memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 20, 2020 at Rivers of Life Foursquare Church in Grants Pass.
