Gentle soft spoken giant Bob" Li’l Axle" Stewart, father, husband and hot rodder passed peacefully in his sleep at home on June 18, 2019. Born in San Diego California in 1934 as the only child of Edward Stewart and Lathilla Williams-Stewart. Bob developed his love of custom hot rod building from his father, Ed "Axle" Stewart. The two became well known for the "Dago" dropped axle that Bob and his father Ed "Axle" Stewart developed and built for custom hot rods during the 40's and 50's. The "Dago" part of the name came from an abbreviation of San Diego, California where the Stewart Speed Shop was located .Check out a short film on YouTube by Randy Johnson called: Bob "Li’l Axle" Stewart 1950 Hot Rods, the Dry Lakes and the Dago Axle for more details of this special man.
Robert Edward Stewart Sr. was the father of two sons, Robert Edward Stewart Jr. an artist and custom hot rod builder himself; and son Edward Andrew Stewart, both still living. Daughter, Cindy Lou Stewart, passed away last year from cancer. Kathleen, his wife, has been blessed to have Bob Sr. in her life the past 44 years. All who knew Bob will miss his humor, stories, and his intimate knowledge of Southern California hot rodding.
