Richard (Dick) Colville Harris

On March 21, 2020, Richard passed away peacefully, at the age of 92.

Richard was born in St. Paul, MN, on August 20, 1927 to Charles William and Louise Colville Harris. He was the third son in a family of five boys. His childhood days were spent in Hinsdale, IL, a suburb of Chicago. In 1945 near the end of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

Although reluctant to admit it, Dick was a man of many talents. His work career placed him in various occupations from ranching to business ownership, plus positions as a millwright and mechanic.

Dick moved to San Diego County in 1950 where he managed his father’s ranch for twelve years. In 1952, he married Lois Bechstein. They adopted two children, Dan and Laura.

In 1962, he purchased a San Diego moving and storage business which he operated for fifteen years.

Following a divorce, Richard moved to Grants Pass in 1977. There he realized his life-long dream of designing and building his own house. It turned out to be a beautiful home in the woods on Marcy Loop. During this time Dick was a well-liked school bus driver on the North Valley routes.

Dick married Ann (Clark) Kuykendall on July 31, 1982. Together they enjoyed their families. Camping, hiking and snow birding to Arizona and Morrow Bay California kept them happy and active.

Upon retirement, Richard shared his outstanding woodworking skills with Newman Methodist Church making fine furniture for both the sanctuary and education building. He was a loyal member of Newman’s chancel choir for over twenty years. He delivered Meals on Wheels to senior citizens as long as he was able.

Dick will always be remembered for his creative spirit and his caring ways.

He is survived by his wife, Ann, his son Dan Frederic Harris and three stepchildren, Janet Smith, Carol Westfall of Beaverton and Dale Kuykendall of Oregon City. He was a special grandfather to eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
