Poul John Nielsen

Poul John Nielsen, age 75, died November 10, 2015, in his home in Grants Pass, Oregon.
Poul was born July 9, 1940, in Odense, Denmark to Svend and Ella Nielsen.

After the close of World War 2, Svend, Ella and Poul immigrated to America, being sponsored by Svend’s sister who lived in Florida. In 1957 the family moved to southern California where Poul completed high school, joining the U.S. Navy immediately after graduation in 1959. Poul served in the Navy for 10 years as a radio operator, making 3 tours to Vietnam.

He met the love of his life while stationed in New Mexico and on November 10, 1963, he married Betty Carol Cast. After separating from the Navy, Poul and family lived for 2 years in Phoenix, Arizona, before moving to Northglenn, Colorado where Poul and Carol raised their 2 sons. In Colorado, Poul was very active in his church, teaching Catechism, teaching adult Bible study and serving as council President.

Poul moved to Grants Pass, Oregon in 2011 where he has been active in the senior singles group at Calvary Lutheran church and serving as an usher for Sunday worship. He has also been active in the Scandinavian Club, serving as president for the past 2 years.

Poul is preceded in death by his parents and by his beloved wife Carol. He is survived by his sons Darron Nielsen and his wife Anna, David Nielsen, by his sister Connie Kurth and her husband Butch, four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who adored him and his sense of humor.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 4, 2015 at 11:00 at Calvary Lutheran Church, 909 NE 'A' Street in Grants Pass, with lunch served after. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Calvary Lutheran Memorial Fund.
