Patricia B. Barkhurst

Patricia B. Barkhurst, age 88, of Grants Pass, died Sunday, August 17, 2014 at and adult foster home.

No services are planned. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Patricia was born March 17, 1926 in Watson, Illinois to Harold & Zola Reynolds. She was raised in Effingham County, Illinois and graduated from high school there. In 1943 she joined the United States Army Nursing Corps to receive her Registered Nursing degree. In 1947 she married Ira Benjamin Barkhurst while he served as a corpsman. For many years she worked in a hospital ER as head nurse. The last half of her career she worked as an industrial nurse including implementing a hearing program in a steel mill. She received several awards and recognition for implementing a full clinical nursing station for health needs beyond just first aid. She lived in Crown Point, Indiana and as a snowbird in Arizona and eventually retired to Scottsdale, Arizona. In late January 2014 she moved to Grants Pass to live near her daughter.

Survivors include a son, Mike Barkhurst of Calamus, Iowa; two daughters, Yvonne Wallace of Summerville, South Carolina and Leigh Thomas of Grants Pass, Oregon; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a her grandson, Timothy Barkhurst in 2007.
