Former Selma resident, Staff Sergeant Nicholas Michael Scalzo, age 28, died October
21, 2019 while stationed in the United States Army in South Korea.
Nicholas was born March 26, 1991 in Sacramento, California. At age five he moved with his
family to Selma where he grew up and attended schools. He graduated from Illinois Valley High School in 2009 where he played soccer and wrestled. In 2011 he joined the United States Army and completed tours in Iraq, Syria, Iran, and Korea.
Nicholas loved playing Xbox video games by himself and with friends; going to the Illinois River and jumping off rocks with his brothers; climbing trees and jumping from one tree to the next; and barbeques. He especially loved spending time with his family and friends. Nick loved people and was never the type to judge. He was a man you could count on. He was an outstanding soldier and friend.
Survivors include his wife Ashley Scalzo of Missouri; his mother Lisa Hensley (Anthony) of Selma; brothers Jeff Evans of Cave Junction, Travis Wilson of Selma and Michael
Spliethof of Selma; sister Talea Hardwick of Springfield and cousin Joel Diaz of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his father Michael Anthony Scalzo in 2009.
A viewing will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12 Noon, November 2, 2019 at Hull & Hull Funeral
Directors. A funeral service with military honors will begin at 1:00 p.m., November 2, 2019 at Hull & Hull Chapel.
