John Michael “Mike” Ausland, age 73, of Grants Pass, died Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Rogue Regional Medical Center.
Mike was born May 30, 1941 in Roseburg, Ore. to Bill & Grace Ausland. He grew up in Grants Pass and was a 1959 graduate of Grants Pass High School. From 1960 to 1962 he served in the in the First Calvary division of the United States Army in the Korean DMZ. After his honorable discharge he returned to Oregon State University where he graduated with a BS in Fisheries and Wildlife in 1965, and again in 1971 with a BS in Construction Engineering. In 1966 in Seaside, Ore. Mike married Susan Dellinger. In 1971 he took over the family business of Ausland Construction which he managed until his retirement in 2004. During his career he built many of the civil structures and commercial buildings in our region. Mike was honored by his sons following in his footsteps continuing the family tradition with careers in the engineering and construction industry.
Mike presently belonged to Merlin Community Baptist Church, Gideon’s International, and Oregon Hunters Association.
An avid outdoorsman, Mike especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved the Lord and looked forward to distributing Gideon Bibles. A devoted OSU fan, he attended many Beavers football games. Most of all, Mike loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Mike is survived by his wife of 49 years, Susan Ausland; two sons, Andrew D. Ausland and Aaron M. Ausland; a brother, Steven L. Ausland; five grandchildren, Bryce, Brianne, Kelsey K., Morgan, and William; and a great-grandson, Jackson all of Grants Pass.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill & Grace Ausland.
A memorial service will be at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Merlin Community Baptist Church with Pastor Everett Denniston officiating. Private interment was held at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
