Mary Jane (Stambaugh) Hanzal

Mary Jane (Stambaugh) Hanzal, age 100, of Grants Pass, died Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at Royale Gardens Health & Rehabilitation Center.

A Rosary will be said in her honor at 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 7, 2011 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors. A Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 8, 2011 at St. Anne Catholic Church. A Celebration of Life “Open House” will be from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday, January 10, 2011 at Royale Gardens Health & Rehabilitation Center. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

She was born Mary Jane Stambaugh on January 10, 1910 in Sumas, Washington, the daughter of Thomas & Theresa Stambaugh. As a young girl she moved to Los Angeles, California. She worked first in the garment industry making lingerie and then with the Los Angeles Police Department where she met Frank J. Hanzal, her future husband, while working as a fingerprint technician. On April 12, 1947 in Los Angeles, they were married. In 1959 they moved to San Marcos, California where she raised her children, practiced her love for gardening, bred and showed keeshond dogs, worked in the electronics trade and was active in the Alter & Rosary Society. In 1969 she moved to her beloved Hawaii. While in Hawaii she operated gift shops, volunteered at Hilo Hospital, was active in the Palm Society, VFW, AARP, and local politics. She loved working in her yard and tending her orchids. She moved to Grants Pass, Oregon in 2001 to be closer to her daughter and volunteered at St Vincent de Paul.

Survivors include three daughters, Dixie Green of Santa Clarita, California, Mary Frances Morris and husband, Bill of Grants Pass and Lori-Ann Vanderwoude and husband, Erwin of Valley Center, California; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; a son, John Marshall and two brothers, Edward and Thomas.
