Mary Elizabeth Scripps Faherty was born on December 4, 1915, in Evanston, Illinois, and died on October 27, 2011, in Grants Pass, Oregon.
“Betty” grew up in Evanston and graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1934. She attended Scripps College for Women in Claremont, California, Northwestern University, the University of Arizona, and graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Science degree in June, 1938.
On May 11,1940, Betty married John William Faherty. Their first child, Thomas Scripps Faherty, was born on July 31, 1942, and died on March 21, 1969. Betty is survived by her son, John William (Bill) Faherty of Santa Rosa, CA, and daughters Mary Louise (Mary Lou) Faherty of Denver, CO, and Kathleen Faherty Doyle of Grants Pass, OR. Her husband, John, died in November, 1979.
Betty and John moved their young family to California in 1948 and settled in Los Angeles for six years before moving to Palos Verdes Estates in 1954. Betty continued to live in Palos Verdes for the next 40 years until relocating to Santa Rosa at age 79 to live near her son, Bill and his wife, Kathy. She enjoyed the next 15 years living in Oakmont, an active adult community in Santa Rosa. In May, 2010, she moved to Grants Pass where her daughter, Kathleen Doyle, lives. She resided at Redwood Terrace where she died peacefully at the age of 95.
Throughout her active years in Palos Verdes Estates, Betty avidly pursued her lifetime interests in playing tennis and drawing and painting. She became an accomplished artist and always entered paintings in the annual art show at the Berger Center in Oakmont.
In addition to her three children, Betty is survived by three grandchildren; Erin Doyle, Shannon Faherty Gomes, and Conor Faherty; and two great-grandchildren, Quinn and Fiona Gomes.
