Marlo Kay Moir

May 6, 1939 — October 27, 2024

Grants Pass

Marlo Kay Mullen-Moir was born in Minot, North Dakota on May 6, 1939. She passed away, surrounded by her loving family, on October 27, 2024.

Kay was raised in Minot. Following her graduation from high school, Kay completed her RN degree at St. Joseph’s School of Nursing. After a tragic car accident broke her back, landing her in a full body cast, she was at the lake with her sister and a young Airman came by, threatening to throw her in the lake. Fortunately for him, he didn’t throw her in the lake. Instead, he got her phone number, writing it in the dust on the hood of his ‘51 Ford. The young Airman was Don, and they were married December 27, 1960. When Don finished his service in the Airforce, they moved to southern California. Kay worked as registered nurse at St. Francis Hospital in Lynwood. She also taught nursing at Lynwood Adult School. By this time, Kay was also mom to three busy boys—Mike, John, and Rick.

The family moved to Grants Pass in 1976 where Kay was a fulltime wife and mom. She also gave countless hours volunteering for many organizations and services including Boy Scouts, Senior Services, St. Annes, Dorcas Society, Grants Pass Kiwanis Club, and Toys for Kidz. Kay was the founder of Quilts for Kids, a network of quilters who provided thousands of quilts for children in need over many years. She continued to use her nursing skill with the local chapter of American Red Cross.

Kay was a caring mother for her three boys. Her RN skills came in handy with many broken bones and teeth, and a wide variety of other injuries and illnesses to her boys (including Don). Kay’s greatest joy was her grandchildren. She was a loving nana and grandma to Jeff Moir (Anna), Tyler Moir (Shirley), Nicholas Moir (Janina), Nathan Moir, and Landon Moir (Anna) and great grandma to Kaylee Moir, Nick Quijada, Ryan and Zoe Moir, Austin Moir, Bristol Moir, and Anastasia Moir. She always had a special treat or toy to give, or craft for them to do together.

Besides her grandchildren, Kay’s other joy was gardening. Kay could grow anything and often shared her gift for growing things by giving cuttings and seeds to friends and family to add to their yards.

Kay is survived by her husband of 64 years, Don, children Mike (Cindy), John (Tammy), and Rick (Michele), her brother John and sister Ardis.

She is predeceased by her parents Madeline and Charles, sister Marlene and brother Bill.

A funeral mass to celebrate Kay’s life will be held at St. Annes Catholic Church in Grants Pass, Oregon on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at 10:00 am. A private interment will follow at Eagle Point National Cemetery.
