Marguerite Anna Mcswan

January 14, 1916 — October 16, 2006

Marguerite Anna McSwan , age 90, a longtime resident of Rogue River, passed away on October 16th, 2006 at Royale Gardens Health and Rehab Center in Grants Pass, OR.
Funeral Services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Grants Pass on October 23rd at 2pm with visitation held at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors of Grants Pass from 9am to 12pm the same day.
Marguerite was born on January 14th 1916 in Alpha, WA, daughter of Robert Benjamin Burnside and Marinda Parnell. In 1918 while pregnant with her 9th child Marguerite’s mother died of the flu epidemic. In 1920 Marguerite’s father moved the family to Cottage Grove, OR. And for the next 8 years her father moved the family back and forth from Cottage Grove, OR to Graton, CA to find work and be around family because of his failing health. In 1928 when arriving back in Graton, CA her father decided he wasn’t physically able to take care of her. And he sent her to stay with her sister Myrtle in Geyserville, CA and it is there she attended and graduated from Geyserville High School in 1933. Shortly thereafter she moved to SanFransisco, CA with a friend and started working for the Morning Glory Sandwich Co. making sandwich’s for 33 1/3 cents and hour. In 1935 after the death of her father she moved to Long Beach, CA and met her first husband George Hancock (Carlyle) at a dance hall and was later married in Yuma, AZ on May 17th 1936. In 1937 while visiting a sister in Napa, CA her first son Melvin Clair was born and later on in Long Beach, CA her second son Edward James (Ed) was born in 1944. In 1949 her and George moved to Yuba City, California and it''s here she started a job with the school cafeteria in 1951. After 6 months as a cook she was made manager of the Gray Avenue Grammar school cafeteria program. After 4 years she was made manager of the High School lunch program and later when the school district consolidated, she was made supervisor of the school lunch program for the district. She retired after 22 years of service as a supervisor of the district schools lunch program in 1973. On December 6th 1982 she married her present husband Donald Jean McSwan and had lived in the Grants Pass area for the remainder of her life.
Marguerite loved her family, hobbies included gardening, painting, making crafts and talking about her families rich history and heritage. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and the White Shrine of Yuba City, CA.
She is survived by her husband, Don McSwan of Rogue River; one son, Ed Carlyle and his wife Erika of Oakland, OR; three step sons Richard McSwan of Grants Pass; Donnie McSwan of Henderson, NV and Ted and his wife Cindy of Apple Gate, two step daughters; Alta Shannon of Reno, NV and Shirley Brooks of Lake Elsinore, CA; OR; seven grandsons, Randy Carlyle of Sacremento, CA; Stephen Carlyle of Tennessee; Dennis Carlyle and his wife Janean of Browns Valley, CA; Rick Carlyle of Sacremento, CA; Mike Carlyle of Sun Valley, NV; Robert Carlyle and his wife Kay of Dillard and Edward Carlyle II of Myrtle Creek; step granddaughter Trista Beckett and her husband Bobby of Grants Pass; 9 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Marinda Burnside; her son Melvin; her two brothers Emmett and James; and her six sisters Pansy, Lillie, Daisy, Myrtle, Rose and Iris.
