Margarete Nielsen Hume

Margarete Nielsen Hume, age 84, of Grants Pass, died Monday, December 5, 2011 at an adult foster home.

A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 10, 2011 at Edgewater Christian Fellowship, 101 Assembly Circle, Grants Pass. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Margarete was born January 5, 1927 at home on the family farm in Minnesota to Hans Martin Nielsen & Ellen Prodoehl Nielsen. Around 1947 she attended nursing school in Minnesota and soon after because of health reasons moved to California. She worked as a telephone operator then obtained a job at Douglas Aircraft where she met Gilbert Rex Hume Jr. They were married in 1950 and together built a home in Redondo Beach, California and raised two children, Larry and Karen. In 1969 the family moved to Norco, California and lived there until 1975. At that time, Rex, Margarete, and Karen moved to Jamul, California and built P.T.L. Ranch which they used as a missionary base. In 1979 Margarete and Rex moved to Williams, Oregon. In 2005 after illness and divorce Margarete moved to Grants Pass, Oregon to live with her daughter, Karen.

Margarete attended Provolt Community Church, Applegate Christian Fellowship, and Edgewater Christian Fellowship.

Over the years she supported Youth With A Mission and other missionaries.

Margarete was a master food preserver and enjoyed watching the wildlife and activities on the Rogue River from her daughter’s home; and singing “You Are My Sunshine” with her daughter.

Survivors include a son, Larry Steven Hume of Corona, California; a daughter, Karen Lee Hume of Grants Pass, Oregon; a sister, Merry Lee Nielsen of Central Point, Oregon; and a brother, Martin Niel Nielsen of Central Point, Oregon.
