Leslie R. “Bob” Ence, age 78, of Rogue River, died Tuesday, October 2, 2007 at his home.
No services are planned. Southern Oregon Cremation Services are in charge of arrangements.
Remembrances may be made to a charity of choice.
He was born Leslie Robert Ence June 9, 1929 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Leslie & Helen (Hickman) Ence. From 1946 to 1966 he served in the United States Navy during both the Korean War and Vietnam War as Chief. During the Vietnam War he served aboard the USS Yorktown and the USS Lyman K. Swenson – a destroyer. On September 15, 1956 in Richmond, California he married Ruth Eloise McMillan. After his retirement from the military, he worked as Manager of Media Operations for Chabot Community College for 25 years until his retirement in 1991. At that time, he moved from Hayward, California where he had lived for 35 years to Rogue River.
He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association. He volunteered for 21 years for Little League of Northern California District where he served as president and then district administrator; 18 years with Boy Scouts of America for the Oakland Council as administrator and manager; from 1965 to 1976 he and his wife were foster parents for 72 children; and he taught 55 Alive driving classes in Grants Pass at Rogue Community College for AARP.
His hobbies included woodworking, camping, and golfing.
In addition to his wife, Ruth Ence of Rogue River; he is survived by two sons, David Ence of Ashland and Dana Ence of Rogue River; two brothers, Garr Ence and Donald Nelson both of Salt Lake City, Utah; two grandsons; a granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
