Leon E. “Max” Maxwell, age 91, of Grants Pass, died Thursday, September 1, 2011 at Three Rivers Community Hospital.

Max was born January 21, 1920 in Morton, Mississippi to Joshua & Elizabeth Maxwell. He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Kodiak, Alaska during World War II for 42 months. On June 4, 1945 in Morro Bay, California he married MaryAnn Riggs who preceded him in death on June 6, 1969. From 1945 until 1959 he worked as a carpenter and helped build the Golden Gate Bridge. He also worked as a Reserve Police Officer and as an Automobile Mechanic in San Mateo, California. From 1959 on, he worked as a Millwright and retired in the early 70’s. On September 23, 1970 in San Jose, California, he married Hattie Mildred Judson who preceded him in death February 23, 2004. Max moved from California to Grants Pass 41 years ago.
His hobbies included woodworking and rug making.
Survivors include his three daughters, Virginia Mattos of San Jose, California, Marilyn Maxwell of Santa Clara, California and Jane Sisco of San Jose California; two sons David Maxwell and wife Annette of Sunnyvale, California and Ronald Maxwell of Burbank, California; three brothers, Roy Maxwell of Dayton, Ohio, Bill Maxwell of Meridian, Mississippi and Otis Maxwell of San Luis Obispo, California; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
