Leo F. Hoebing

Leo F. Hoebing, age 82, of Grants Pass, died Sunday, August 10, 2008. Leo died in hospice at home, surrounded by his wife and children.

A funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 14, 2008 at St. Anne Catholic Church with Monsignor Moys officiating. Interment will follow at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the James L. Hoebing Memorial Scholarship Fund, RCC Foundation, 3345 Redwood Highway, Grants Pass, OR 97527.

Leo was born December 20, 1925 in Quincy, Illinois to Frank and Mary Hoebing. He retired from the United States Navy after serving 22 years. On June 6, 1944, D-Day, he took part in the Normandy invasion. He received many ribbons and medals during his navy career. On July 4, 1953 in St. Louis, Missouri he married Jean Jecmen. In 1966 they relocated to Grants Pass. They recently celebrated 55 years of marriage.

He was in the Fleet Reserve Association for 50 years. He received a degree from Rogue Community College.

Leo was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He always had a large vegetable garden and many animals. He enjoyed playing in poker tournaments around the country, especially at Seven Feathers Casino and Resort. He and his wife made frequent trips across the country in their motor home.

Survivors include his spouse, Jean Hoebing of Grants Pass, children, John Hoebing of San Diego, California, Dr. Janet Kuivila of Chagrin Falls, Ohio (Dr. Tom Kuivila) and Joyce Hoebing (John Williams) of Baltimore, Maryland; a brother, Father Philibert Hoebing of Quincy, Illinois, and brother-in-law Charles Jecmen (wife, Jean), 5 grandchildren (Parker, Ellie, Reed, Graham, and Vivian) and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Hoebing, who died October 10, 1997.
