Larry Michael Cathey

Larry Michael Cathey, age 34, of Grants Pass died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at his home of colon cancer.

Viewing will be held Wednesday from 12 Noon to 8 p.m. at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors.

Services will be held in New Boston, Mich. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Colon Cancer Alliance, 1025 Vermont Ave. N.W., Suite 1066, Washington, DC 20005.

He was born Aug. 28, 1979, in Trenton, Mich., to Larry and Amy Cathey. He was raised in Huron Township, Mich. In 1997, he graduated from Huron High School, where he lettered in golf, basketball, baseball and football. In 2006, he earned his journalism degree from Eastern Michigan University, where he was sports editor for the Eastern Echo school newspaper. He also worked for the Detroit News and covered the NBA finals in 2004. He continued his career in Hugo, Okla., and Paris, Texas, before moving to Grants Pass in 2008. He then worked for the Grants Pass Daily Courier as a sports reporter and was promoted to sports editor in February 2012. On May 12, 2011, in Nassau, Bahamas, he married Linsay Olesak, who survives.

He enjoyed reading, writing, hiking, camping, softball, basketball and rafting.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Samantha Rose Cathey of Grants Pass; his parents, Larry and Amy Cathey of New Boston, Mich.; a brother, Alan Cathey of New Boston; and his grandmother, Jean Cathey of Allen Park, Mich. and brother-in-law, Rodney Olesak of Phoenix, Arizona.
