Julie Ann Horowitz

March 20, 1942 — December 30, 2018

Julie Ann Kimport Horowitz, beloved community member of Grants Pass and cherished wife of Dan Horowitz passed away as the result of a car accident on December 30, 2018.

A Celebration of Life will be held as a memorial for all who knew her and loved her on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at 3 pm at Hull and Hull Funeral Home.

Julie first came to Grants Pass as a frequent visitor in the ‘90s to spend time with her mother, Dorothy Arnold, who some will remember as a 25-year employee at the Siskiyou Forest Service, and who had lived in the area since the 1970s. Eventually, Julie and Dan moved up into the hills above town in February 2004 with their llamas and goats (and cats and dogs), and have been deeply involved ever since in such organizations and activities as the Grants Pass Kiwanis. After settling here Julie was a volunteer at HASL for several years. Julie will be missed by people all over town, as she made friends wherever she went, in shops and restaurants and the Post Office… and many of those who did not know her name would still recognize and remember her as the lady who was always picking up other people’s trash and leaving the streets and parking lots and town areas cleaner than she found them. She recycled long before it became fashionable.

Julie was born in Southern California, and is also remembered and missed by many of her fellow graduates from El Segundo High School, with whom she maintained friendships throughout her life. As a girl she was a swimmer and bowler, later a cheerleader and an exchange student to Argentina, before marrying her first husband, Larry Trevathan, also of El Segundo. Together they raised three boys, Donnie, Marty and Rod, who have also been frequent visitors (and sometimes short-term residents) of Grants Pass.

Julie spent the longest portion of her career at UCLA as an Administrative Assistant in the Contracts and Grants Department, where she met, and later married Dan, her true-life partner, and helped raise his son from a prior marriage, Steven. She filled her days and the years with skiing, camping, travel to such exotic places as the Galapagos Islands, and then later, along with Dan, became a square dancer and cruise frequenter.

Julie and Dan first met at UCLA in 1978 when he came to work there. They dated for 4 years prior to getting married in June 1993. For their 25-year wedding anniversary they went on a river cruise from Paris to Prague and had a wonderful time in Europe, their first time there. As stated above Julie loved the cruise ships and they went on many ocean cruises with their friends. She went to places like Alaska, Caribbean Islands, Mexico and Canada.

Julie and Dan also liked to attend performances at Barnstormer's as well as the Rogue Valley Symphony. She loved to go out to our local restaurants (anytime she didn’t have to cook was a good time, she would say). Julie had a deep love for Barbershop (4-part harmony) music and attended many shows, competitions and conventions during her lifetime. She also sung in a Sweet Adelines Chorus in El Segundo. She loved to work outdoors and was a master at weed pulling. She loved her animals especially our llamas. Julie also enjoyed relaxing in our hot tub.

Anyone who knew Julie well or visited her home knew of her passion for collecting frogs (decorative, not living!). And practically anyone who ever met Julie rapidly got to know her well, as she was effervescent, friendly, curious about people’s lives, and always, always making new friends. Which she is probably busy doing now, in the lands beyond ours where she has now traveled on to.

She is survived by her husband Dan, her three sons Donnie, Rodney and Marty and her step-son Steven, her brother Will, and her two grandchildren Xenon and Rio, and two step-grandchildren Megan and Jenine.
