John (Jack) George Hentges

October 20, 1933 — April 27, 2013

John (Jack) George Hentges of Grants Pass died in his sleep, April 27th at Highland House in Grants Pass, Oregon. Jack was born at Providence Hospital in Portland, Oregon, October 20, 1933 to Ethel (Clearwater) and Jack Hentges, Sr. He had three sisters, Carrol, Bonnie and Ann.

He was raised in Washougal, Washington where his grandfather, Doc Clearwater, was a horse and buggy doctor for many years. After high school he attended college on a basketball scholarship, but ruined his knee almost immediately, and joined the army. He was stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia where he was a baker. He returned home to Washougal upon the death of his father, to take over the family trucking runs delivering Oregonian newspapers from the coast to The Dalles, Oregon.

Jack married a high school classmate, Patricia Jones, and they raised two children, JR and Jacqueline in that area. Jack and Patricia also bought and ran Camas-Washougal Riverside Bowl for six years before selling both businesses andretiring to Eastern Oregon for the pheasant hunting. There, they bought and ran a caf and several rentals. After sixteen years they moved to Grants Pass for the milder weather.

Jack was an avid hunter and fisherman all his life, and he loved camping and spending time in the woods, falling trees for firewood or clearing their five acres in Grants Pass. In his later years he spent his time bowling in several leagues at Showtime and Caveman Bowl.

Jack is survived by his wife, two children, two grandchildren, a great granddaughter, and two sisters.

There will be so services per his request. Illinois Valley Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
