Jim T. Smith, age 86, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at Highland House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
A viewing will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Merlin Ward Relief Society Room.
A funeral service with military funeral honors will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Merlin Ward. Private interment will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
Jim was born August 13, 1924 in Ventura, California to Edward Talmage Smith & Ethel Greenlee Smith. He grew up in Casita Springs, California. In 1942 he graduated from high school in Ventura and worked for the forest service on horseback. During World War II from 1942 to 1946 he served in the United States Army. On December 24, 1948 in Ventura he married M. Jaudon Waunch and they were later sealed in the Portland Temple in 1993. Jim attended Ventura Junior College and later earned a bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly in 1952. During those years he worked nights and attended school by day. His career was spent in the poultry and feed industry, working in sales, field work, and management. He retired in the mid 1980s.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Merlin Ward; Computer Bug Club of Grants Pass; Metal Detectors Club; a social dance club; and the Good Sam Club. He was a ham radio operator and helped with Boatnik as a radio operator.
In addition to his memberships, he enjoyed RV traveling and was known for his wit and sense of humor.
Survivors include his wife, M. Jaudon Smith of Grants Pass, Oregon; three children, Sandra Bowen and her husband Paul of Sunny Valley, Oregon, Barry Smith and his wife Julie of Kila, Montana, and Martin Smith and his wife Sherry of Modesto, California; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
