Jim Crumpton

Jim Crumpton, age 79, of Grants Pass, died Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Highland House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

A celebration of life will begin at 2:00 p.m. and go to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Parkway Christian Center – Fellowship Hall. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Jim was born July 19, 1934 in Macon, Georgia to Jim & Ethel Crumpton. He later moved to the West Coast when he was 10 years old. He graduated from Glendale High School in Glendale, California and Southern California Bible College (now Vanguard University) in Costa Mesa, California. During high school and college, he was an 880 yard runner. After moving to Oregon he attended Southern Oregon College (now Southern Oregon University) where he was an assistant track coach. He continued college and completed his teacher’s degree at University of Oregon. While attending UO he commuted daily to Canyonville Christian Academy (then Canyonville Bible Academy) to coach the track team; his first head coaching job. In 1964 he took a job at Eagle Point High School and later at Medford Senior High School where he taught and coached. In 1965 he and Roger Shaffer founded “Who’s Who In Oregon Track.” In 1969 he returned to CCA where he coached three district championship teams until 1972. In the 1980s he was a coach at Mt. San Antonio College (Mt Sac) in Walnut, California. Jim coached many successful track and cross country teams over the years winning district, state and national championships, and coached some Olympic track athletes. He founded and operated the companies Promothon which put on fundraiser jog-a-thons for schools and other groups and International Sports Exchange which took thousands of high school athletes all over the world for sports competition. In the mid 1990s Jim returned to Grants Pass and coached at New Hope Christian School and again at Canyonville Christian Academy. On November 22, 2002 in Canyonville, he married his wife, Colleen.

Jim attended Parkway Christian Center for many years and was on the board of Canyonville Christian Academy.

His hobbies included reading, traveling, sports, and taking naps. He loved people and the Oregon Ducks.

Survivors include his wife, Colleen Crumpton of Grants Pass, Oregon; two daughters, Shari Weigerstofer of Singapore and Karen Crumpton of Maui, Hawaii; two sons, Scott Crumpton of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Shane Crumpton of Grants Pass, Oregon; three grandchildren; and his former wives, Helen Smith of Wilderville, Oregon and Rebecca Reselejos of Grants Pass, Oregon.
