A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, January 17, 2011 at Hull and Hull Funeral Directors. Private Interment will be held at a later date.
Hasting was born May 26, 1920 in Hominy, OK to William and Ella Hasting. By the age of 21 years he had completed a four-year union carpenter apprenticeship which launched his 69 year career in the construction industry. He was a veteran of the US Navy serving aboard the USS Ajax in the Pacific Ocean Theatre during World War II. He was a member of the Grants Pass Masonic Lodge #84 A.F. & A.M. On February 13, 1946 in Inglewood, CA, he married June Hobart. June preceded him in death just one month prior to their 60th wedding anniversary in 2006. They moved their family to Grants Pass in August 1952 and started Jim Hasting, Contractor company. For 55 years Jim was active in Grants Pass in residential and commercial construction, remodeling, cabinet making, lumber sales, and finish carpentry. He retired from full time work in 2007 at the age of 87 years.
Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying annual deer hunting trips to Eastern Oregon in his younger years and even tracking down a bear or two. He owned several RVs over the years which provided camping and fishing opportunities for his family both locally and as far away as Alaska. Jim also was known for his plentiful vegetable gardens which not only supplied his family but also neighbors and friends.
Hasting is survived by four sons and their families, Thomas and Sharon Hasting of Newport, OR; Jerry and Sara Hasting of Chandler, AZ; Jeffrey Hasting of Carrolton, TX; and Mark and Jamie Hasting of Grants Pass; a brother Billy Hasting of Kingman, AZ; a sister-in-law Betty Hasting of Midwest City, OK; a sister-in-law Dorothy and Kenneth Prairie of Ventura, CA; 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
