James Lincoln Lord, 92, of Grants Pass died May 24, 2014, at Redwood Terrace Assisted Living of heart failure.
He was born July 30, 1921 in Lyme, Connecticut at the Lord family farmhouse to Reginald L. Lord & Marie F. (Sheppard) Lord. He grew up on the family farm through the Great Depression era of the 1930s, which left a lifelong impression of thrift, value, and appreciation of everything in his life. At age 17, he learned to fly airplanes and worked for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft until he enlisted in the Army. At that time, there was a need for medical corpsmen, which is what the Army later trained him to do. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater in the 323rd Medical Battalion, Company C, of the 98th Infantry Division of the Army as a tech sergeant, until his honorable discharge in 1946. He met and married Florence M. Poirier in August of 1943 at Fort Breckinridge, Kentucky, just prior to his deployment. Upon return to civilian life, he purchased land and built a lakeside house in Lyme, Connecticut where he started a construction company. After many years, he sold his interest in the construction company, and after pursuing other interests, was offered a position as a factory service technician with the automotive manufacturer Saab-Scania USA. After his “retirement” from Saab-Scania, he decided to learn to build furniture and cabinetry, which he continued to do as a hobby until his old age prevented him from woodworking.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Florence, and a sister, Yvonne.
He is survived by his younger sister, June Guillow of Hartford, Connecticut; his two sons, Chaz T. of Eureka, California and James N. of Burbank, California; and two grandchildren.
Jim was admired for his wit and sense of fair-play by all who knew him, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Interment of his cremains will be Thursday, June 5, 2014 at 3 p.m. at Eagle Point National Cemetery, Eagle Point, Oregon. All those wishing to attend are invited for a military honors ceremony. Illinois Valley Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.
Donations in his memory may be made to Lovejoy Hospice, 939 SE 8th Street, Grants Pass, Oregon.
