Herbert G Schutz, 86, of Kerby, Oregon, went to be with the Lord on Sept 7th, 2021 while at Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford, Oregon. His wife Joan was at there with him.
Herb was born in Frontier County, Nebraska on June 20, 1935 to Ernest and Louise (Stagameyer) Schutz. Herb was one of nine children.
He attended Salem Lutheran School in rural Gosper County, near Elwood, Nebraska from 1942 - 1950. He was a veteran of the US Army drafted 7/15/1958 where he completed his GED and served in the Post-Korean War; on border night-watch duty, mechanic duty and a driver for upper officers until he was honorably discharged on 6/29/1960. He married Joan L (Whitehead) Schutz on 12/22/1962.
After his schooling he assisted his dad with running the family farm near Elwood, NE, helping with crops and cattle management for approximately 600 acres of owned/leased land. He returned upon discharge to help his mom manage the family farm due his dad’s passing 3/3/1960.
After helping his mom, he pursued a career in mechanics primarily in the Tractor/ Farm Equipment Industry mainly for John Deere in Nebraska. He opened “Herb’s Tractor and Auto Repair” in 1980 in Holdrege, NE. Seeking new opportunities, the family moved to Talent, OR in 1983 only to move back to Nebraska in 1986 continuing his career before retiring in 1998 in Kerby, OR.
He was an active member of Valley Evangelical Free Church in Cave Junction, OR and having a strong work ethic, he enjoyed helping with the construction of the church.
He loved making others laugh, time with his family, country music, western movies, and nice cars.
Having a passion for trains, steam engines and John Deere tractors; he enjoyed attending steam engine shows, fabricating working model steam engines, restoring a John Deere tractor for his son Daniel, and on occasion he helped friends restore vintage cars.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Ervin Schutz & Merlyn Schutz, sisters: Eleanore Schutz & Maxine Snurr, sisters-in-law: Marge Schutz & Ila Schutz, brothers-in-law: Virgil Wegener & Clarence Snurr, niece: Lorie Vowers; nephew: Jeffery Schutz; father-in-law Ernest Whitehead & mother-in-law Gertude Whitehead.
He is survived by his wife: Joan; his children: Linda(Don) Berryhill-Central Pt, OR; Larry (Cathy) Schutz-McCook, NE & Daniel Schutz-Kerby, OR; step-grandchild: Nick (Kelley) Berryhill-Central Pt, OR; grandchildren: James(Chelsea) Berryhill-White City, OR & Elizabeth Schutz-McCook, NE; step great grandchildren: Ryan Berryhill-OR & Brittany Berryhill-Yreka, CA; great grandchild: Mason Berryhill-White City, OR.; brothers: Wayne Schutz-Cambridge, NE; Eugene (Carol) Schutz-Cozad, NE; Sisters: Evelyn Wegener-Norton, KS; Marlene(William) Knoerzer-Elwood, NE; sister-in-law: Sandra (Earl) Scarrow and many nieces and nephews.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
The military honors and committal service will be held 11:00 am, Friday 10/01/2021 at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hull and Hull- Grants Pass, OR.
