Helene M. Luczy, age 94, of Grants Pass, died Friday, October 29, 2010 at her daughter’s home.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 13, 2010 at Hull & Hull Chapel with Pastor Mark Skudstad officiating. Private interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Helene was born December 30, 1915 in Weil am Rhein, Germany. She was a track and field champion of her state in Germany and an alternate in the 1936 Olympics. In 1951 she immigrated to the United States. She worked as a nurse in both Germany and the United States. In 1993 she moved from Thousand Oaks, California to Grants Pass to be with her beloved daughter, Clara.
Helene was a lover of literature, art, music and the wonders of God’s creations, especially the Redwoods and Yosemite Valley. An avid gardener, she delighted in her spring bulb garden every year. She was a master at ceramics and practiced the fine art of calligraphy well in to her 90’s with great skill. She loved rafting the Rogue River and at the age of 79 climbed Table Rock. She also loved to play the card game UNO and was the champion of many tournaments at family gatherings.
Helene was a member of the Smithsonian Institute and National Geographic Society.
Survivors include a son, George Luczy of Mariposa, California; a daughter, Clara Putlitz of Grants Pass, Oregon; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Leslie Luczy.
