Helen Homand age 91, widow of Vince Homand, mother and grandmother passed away at Rogue River Regional Medical Center on Saturday July 25, 2020.
Helen was born on January 14, 1929 in Kalispell Montana where she spent her childhood.
At the beginning of WWII her family relocated to San Diego CA. The move offered Helen the opportunity to showcase her talent for singing by performing with the USO.
The family then moved to Grants Pass where she graduated from high school. Shortly after graduation Helen entered the Miss America Pageant and she was crowned the first Miss Grants Pass in 1947. Later that year, Helen and Vince married and started their family when Steve was born in 1951.
A few years later, the young family moved to Southern CA and their second son Scott was born in 1962. In addition to raising her family, Helen was very active in her community and volunteered at a local hospital, as well as training to become a nurse’s aid and belonged to a Sweet Adeline’s quartet.
Retirement brought them back to Grants Pass where Helen kept busy with her many interests and hobbies including gardening, creating greeting cards and doing embroidery. She continued her community service by tutoring children at Redwood Elementary School.
Helen is survived by her sons Steve and Scott, Steve’s wife Terry, granddaughter Danielle and sisters Marilyn and Margaret.
