Former Grants Pass resident, Helen Emmaline Haines, age 97, of Roseburg, died Friday, September 3, 2010 at Rose Haven Nursing Center.
A graveside service will be at 10:00 am, Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Granite Hill Cemetery in Grants Pass, Oregon. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church, 823 SE Lane Ave, Roseburg, Oregon 97470.
Helen was born June 9, 1913 in Deep River, Iowa to Morris Irvin Sterrett & Naomi Fremont Barber Sterrett. She was the oldest of eight children - five girls and three boys. She grew up and attended schools in Gibson, Iowa. On March 2, 1931 in Montezuma, Iowa she married Kenneth Ellsworth Haines. She lived in Cottage Grove and Grants Pass before moving to Roseburg.
Helen was a former member of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grants Pass where she was active in the lady's group; and was a past member of Neighbors of Woodcrafts. She volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and with Senior Centers in both Cottage Grove and Roseburg. An avid bingo player, Helen also enjoyed sewing and needlecrafts. Every grandchild and great-grandchild received a quilt made by her. She also never missed sending birthday and anniversary cards to everyone in her family.
Survivors include three daughters, Glenna M. Zarbano of Roseburg; Gertrude 'Trudy' N. White of Roseburg and Connie I. Asay of Jefferson; brother, Max E. Sterrett of Phoenix, AZ; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth E. Haines in 1969; her son Irvin E. Haines in 2008.
