Harland “Les” Crump, age 84, of Grants Pass, died Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at The Bridge.
A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m., Monday, September 17, 2012 at Woodville Cemetery in Rogue River. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
Les was born April 26, 1928 in Corning, California to Raymond & Grace Crump. As a baby he had polio and whooping cough. He left Corning with his family as a small child and moved during the Great Depression to the top of Bly Mountain between Klamath Falls and Lakeview where Les and his family lived in a tent. They later moved to Sprague River where they also lived in a tent on the Klamath Indian Reservation. While living on the reservation his father worked in logging and Les started school. Later he moved to Klamath Falls where he worked as a service station attendant. He also worked as an attendant in John Day. He moved from Klamath Falls to Grants Pass in 1951.
He was a member of the Eagles and was a Boy Scout Leader. He enjoyed helping at the Lake of the Woods Boy Scout Camp. He would ride his bike from Grants Pass to Lake of the Woods.
His hobbies included camping and riding his bike on long bike treks with his friend Steve into his late 70’s. Despite the fact he was crippled from polio and had right sided paralysis he loved riding his bike. For many years in Grants Pass he rode around town in his golf cart, then a riding lawn mower and then a motorized wheelchair. He was soft hearted and helped people, never complained and was very well liked and happy to see everyone.
Survivors include a sister, Donna Rae Harris of Alvin, Texas; cousins, Sam and wife Marilyn Evensizer of Rogue River and two nieces, Clarice Shanks and Sally Morris, both of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond & Grace Crump.
