Glenn "Lewie" Spencer

Glenn “Lewie” Spencer died peacefully on October 6, 2013. He was 84 years old.

A viewing will be from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at Illinois Valley Funeral Directors.

A memorial service will be 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at Immanuel United Methodist Church in Cave Junction. Private interment will be at Laurel Cemetery. Illinois Valley Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

He and his wife of 63 years, Melba “Jo” (Johnson) Spencer, have resided in Cave Junction, Oregon since 1981. He and Jo moved from Yermo, California where they had lived since 1959. He worked for the State of California as an Agricultural Inspector for 35 years. He was transferred to the Redwood Highway Agricultural Inspection Station in Cave Junction as a supervisor. He retired in 1991. Throughout his life, Lewie worked a variety of jobs, including; school bus driver, handyman, finish carpenter, and farmer.

Lewie was born in 1929 in Butler, Oklahoma. He was the fourth of eight children born to Glenn Forrest and Daphene Juanita Spencer. His parents owned a farm in Washita County, Oklahoma. He helped to pay for the family farm by raising and selling turkeys. He graduated from Butler High School in 1948. While in high school Lewie was employed as a school bus driver.

In 1950 he met and married Jo in Butler, Oklahoma and together they had four children; Carla, Connie, Roger, and Cyndi. When Carla was nine weeks old they moved from Oklahoma to California to help Lewie’s eldest brother develop farmland in Bard, California. A few years later, Lewie was employed by the State of California and moved first to Daggett, California followed by a longer stay in Yermo, California.

Lewie was a Lion’s Club member for over 50 years. He helped charter the Yermo-Calico Lion’s Club. He joined the Illinois Valley Lion’s Club in 1991.

He served as President for the Yermo School District Board of Trustees. He was also a member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, camping, gardening and keeping busy. In his later years he enjoyed reading western novels and watching western movies on TV.

He is survived by his wife, Jo of Cave Junction; his children Carla Francis (Bill) Philomath, Oregon; Connie Gammel (Roger), Cave Junction, Oregon; Roger Spencer (Rosanne) Fair Oaks, California; and Cyndi Spencer (Matt Bilyeu), Grants Pass, Oregon; ten grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. He is also survived by four brothers; Mindle Spencer, Arnold Spencer, Royce Spencer, Donald Spencer and his sister, Wanda Henderson.
