George P. Bowie transitioned into heaven on November 22, 2014, at the age of 90.
He leaves his wife of 31 years, Eileen (Miller) Bowie; his daughters, Ruth Bowie, Kathy Baker, Jeanie Hyatt, Jennifer Browne, Bridget Paciorek and Kelly Tortes; his grandchildren, Christopher Browne, Kate Kort, Jimmy Baker, Laura Baker, Carrie Hyatt, Jack and Carson Paciorek, Al, Dominik, Magdalena, Logan and Quinten Tortes and great-grandchildren, Cierra Hyatt, Judah and Maya Kort.
He was born in Albany, New York, on September 23, 1924, the son of George L. and Cortilda (Smith) Bowie.
He served in the Army, the 656th Tank Destroyer Battalion and was part of the company that landed on Utah Beach, D-Day plus one. He shared many stories of his training and his participation in WWII, always with reserve, pride, respect and love for his country.
After his military service, he had opportunity to study Law and graduated from the University of Baltimore in 1951. From private practice to corporate law, he was a dedicated lawyer, sensitive to the needs of the people he encountered. He was a skilled practitioner and mediator, attentive to detail and passionate about his work. He listened thoughtfully to everyone and considered many sides of the issue. He was compassionate and generous.
In the 1970s, a very close friend from England recognized George by bestowing upon him an honorary position in the Coldstream Guard.
Even though he mostly dedicated his life to the law, he loved his wife and his six daughters more than anything in life, calling them his angels.
Tall, commanding, compassionate, and powerful, George loved deeply and laughed freely. His sense of duty and fairness to country, company, family, friends and strangers alike made a lasting impression on all who met him.
The last few years of his life were riddled with great challenges of his illness, Lewy Body Dementia. Even then, George’s brilliant being continued to teach his wife and daughters about a deeper, different and more spiritual communication of love and an appreciation for all of life’s blessings.
He was a remarkable man and will be remembered for his gentle strength, respect and a laugh that would bring us all to tears.
We will miss him – tremendously.
