George M. Halterman

George M. Halterman, age 92, of Grants Pass, died Thursday, August 28, 2014 at his home.

A graveside service with military honors will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 5, 2014 at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

George was born August 5, 1922 in Boise, Idaho. He was a United States Navy veteran of both World War II and Korea. In 1975 he retired from Civil Service. He lived in Fairfield, California for 60 years before moving to Grants Pass, Oregon in 2006.

For 30 years, George was a hunter safety instructor and received several commendations from California Fish & Game for his tireless efforts. He was also active in Boy Scouts of America, the Sea Scouts, the Fairfield Rod and Gun Club and the Junior Rifle Club in Fairfield.

George loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also loved the ocean and maintained a commercial fishing boat at Bodega Bay for many years. He was an avid cribbage player and organized tournaments for the Fairfield Senior Center. He also enjoyed monthly summer vacations for 25 years in the Idaho outback, packing in their supplies on the backs of horses and mules and spending their time fishing, riding horses, reading and making great family memories.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Beverly Halterman of Grants Pass, Oregon; two sons, Eric Halterman of the Philippines and Howard Halterman of Grants Pass, Oregon; a daughter, Mary Ann Halterman Cushing of Grants Pass, Oregon; grandchildren, Darby Fry, Dennis Fry, Calli Cushing, Trey Cushing, Kyra Halterman and Karly Halterman; a great-grandson, Peyton Cushing; and a brother, Calvin Halterman.

George was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Halterman Fry and a daughter-in-law, Rose Halterman; five sisters, Hazel Shirley, Dorothy Woolsey, Katherine Pope, Edna Bebb, and Pearl Boggan and two brothers, Earl Halterman and Lester Halterman.
