Gary L. Smith, age 62, of Grants Pass, died Friday, December 28, 2012 at Three Rivers Medical Center.
A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Disabled American Veterans.
Gary was born March 30, 1950 in Prineville, Oregon to Leo & Jeane Smith. In 1968 he graduated from Grants Pass High School and enlisted in the United States Army. From 1969 to 1970 he served in the Vietnam War. After returning to Grants Pass he met and married, Chris Wegley and they had one child, Lance Smith. Gary earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice at Southern Oregon College. He started logging with Spalding & Son and also spent time logging in Haines, Alaska with his father. He then returned to Grants Pass to log for Spalding & Son in Northern California. Gary then started a new career in auto sales with Riverside Chrysler and Retzloff Dodge. He lastly worked in RV sales at River City RV’s in Medford/Grants Pass until declining health forced retirement.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing, camping, and skeet shooting.
Survivors include a son, Lance Smith of Tacoma, Washington; his father & stepmother, Leo & George Ann Smith of Haines, Alaska; a sister, LaVerla Young of Grants Pass, Oregon; a stepbrother, Andrew Smith of La Habra, California; a stepsister, Cindy Bennett of Alaska; a niece, Trisha Young of Salem, Oregon and a nephew, Jared Young of Grants Pass, Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Jeane Harvey.
