Ernie Gibson

Ernie Gibson, son of Hoot and Adaline Gibson, died on October 8, 2019 at his home in Gold Hill, Oregon.

Ernie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Duke Gibson; his twin boys, Brent Gibson of Central Point and Brady Gibson of Medford; brother, Russell Gibson of Grants Pass and sister, Linda Fladoos of Washougal, Washington; and three grandchildren, Jake Gibson, Melanie Gibson, and Victoria Marshall.

Ernie was born Oct 5, 1941 in Grants Pass, Oregon. He graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1959 and graduated from Multnomah School of the Bible in 1963. He married Duke Abston of Grants Pass on March 19, 1964. In 1966 Ernie was drafted into the army and served in Vietnam in the 1st Air Cavalry. He was wounded and received a Purple Heart and, for his outstanding service, was awarded a Silver Star and a Bronze Star. Ernie was discharged in November of 1968 and moved to Portland, Oregon. There he worked for D&M Wood Products and attended Portland State University, graduating with a master’s degree in 1970. In 1979, the family moved to Gold Hill. Ernie worked for Medford Corporation for several years then transferred to Master Brand Cabinets in Grants Pass, where he retired in 2007.

Ernie loved to spend time with his family, including his extended family, and loved cheering for his Oregon Ducks. He was deeply involved with the ministry of his church, Foots Creek Chapel, where he served as an elder and taught Sunday School. You would often find him in his study, Bible open on his desk, and Tennessee Ernie Ford gospel songs playing in the background. Ernie’s exceptional people skills brought him many friends and made him an excellent manager everywhere he worked.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 19th, at 10:00 AM at Community Bible Church, 500 N 10th St, Central Point, OR 97502, and a family graveside service later in the afternoon.
