Ellen Bastian died peacefully in Grants Pass on Feb. 15, 2017 with her family by her
side. She was born in Xenia, Ohio to Charlie and Dottie Kyle and moved to Oregon with
her parents in 1960. She attended Lake Oswego HS where she was active in several
clubs. She attended Southern Oregon College, where she met her husband, Ken, the
love of her life. The two were married in June, 1965 and originally moved to Klamath
Falls. They subsequently moved to Medford, where they lived for 31 years. Following
retirement, they moved to Chiloquin, OR where Ken built their dream home and resided
for 17 years. They moved to Grants Pass last year.
Ellen enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting with her family. Her two special outings
were to Crater Lake and the Oregon coast, which she did as often as time allowed. She
was a wonderful and dedicated mother, a superb homemaker and a fantastic baker. Her
cherry pies were known by extended family and friends across the country! Family
reunions and gatherings were favorite times where she readily mixed it up with the more
rambunctious attendees. She was a voracious reader, enjoying a wide variety of
genres. Ellen had a ready laugh and a warm, welcoming smile. She was an example
of how to be loving and present. You knew that you were always welcome and she
brought out the best in you. She will be remembered fondly.
Ellen is survived by her husband, Ken of Grants Pass, daughter, Michelle of Medford,
son, James also of Grants Pass, and two grandchildren, CJ and Autumn. Instead of
flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Josephine Community Libraries,
Inc. (JCLI).
Private interment services were held locally. A memorial service celebrating Ellen’s life
will be held later in the summer.
