Douglas S. Smith, 78, of Grants Pass, Oregon died Saturday, July 15, 2006 at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 28, 2006 at Newman United Methodist Church in Grants Pass with the Reverend Melissa Harkness-Haugen officiating. Southern Oregon Cremation Servics are in charge of arrangements.

He was born on January 28, 1928 in Portland, Oregon. In 1949 he was a Forestry graduate from Oregon State University. He obtained his Masters Degree in 1967 from OSU. On October 22, 1952 in Ketchikan, Alaska he married the former Margaret Jones, who survives. During his career, he held various forestry positions across the western United States and Washington, DC. In 2002 he moved from Truckee, California to Grants Pass.
He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity; Society American Foresters; and was a registered professional forester in California.
He volunteered his time to clubs and youth groups to help promote environmental stewardship. He also did volunteer work for the Grants Pass Chamber of Commerce.
He enjoyed fishing, clam digging, woodworking and cooking.
In addition to his wife, Margaret Smith of Grants Pass, Oregon; survivors include three sons, Sterling Smith of Vacaville, California; Donald Smith of Houston, Texas; and Steven Smith of Reston, Virginia; a daughter, Lisa Smith of Reva, Virginia; a sister, Barbara Sloop of Salem, Oregon; and seven grandchildren.
