Dorothy Hagan, aka Dorothy Hagan Sarmento, age 94, of Merlin, Oregon, passed away on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, while at Highland House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grants Pass.
Dorothy had lived in Merlin for over 30 years after living in Coos Bay, Oregon.
She was born Dorothy Howard on October 25, 1923, in Danville, Arkansas. Dorothy was the youngest of four children born to Joseph Hasting Howard and Maude Ella Howard (Havner). Dorothy was raised in Southern California, where she met her first husband, Delmar Diltz. They had two children, Mickey June Eller (James David Henry) of Cave Junction, Oregon, and Ronald Diltz (Ruthie) of Eagle River, Alaska. The family moved to Grants Pass shortly after WWII, where Delmer worked for the U.S. Post Office and Dorothy was a homemaker.
After 28 years of marriage, they were divorced and Dorothy married Howard Hagan (retired Los Angeles deputy sheriff).
Dorothy enjoyed driving a school bus for many years for the Grants Pass School District. In addition to driving a school bus, she also worked for a time at the Josephine County Hospital.
After Howard Hagan passed away, Dorothy married the love of her life, Charles Jerry Sarmento, in 2006.
Dorothy loved camping, fishing, and hunting, but her biggest passion was bowling. She was a talented bowler with multiple trophies. Dorothy loved the San Francisco Giants and, of course, the 49ers. She and Charles watched every Giants baseball game that they could. And, she loved western movies, the older the better. Dorothy spent many years enjoying and entertaining friends and family at her riverfront property above the dam (Savage Rapids Dam) on the Rogue River.
Dorothy was a member of Saint Anne Catholic Church in Grants Pass.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Charles Jerry Sarmento; as well as her children, Mickey June Eller (James David Henry) of Cave Junction, Ron Diltz (Ruthie) of Eagle River, Alaska; also Charles Sarmento’s children, Charles Sarmento (Megan) of Yreka, California, Vicky LaTulip (Doug) of Grants Pass, Nalonnie Duncan (Jeremy) of Grants Pass, Eric Sarmento (Amber) of Tualatin, Oregon, Christine Ganby of Grants Pass; 17 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her three brothers, Claude, Glenn and Harold Howard, along with one grandson, Joseph Eller in 1998.
