Donald L. Hanscom, 67, of Cave Junction died Tuesday November 13th, 2012 at Three Rivers Community Hospital.
A memorial service will be held Monday November 19th, 2012 at the Illinois Valley Funeral Home in Cave Junction. Funeral service will be at 11am.
He was born February 15th, 1945 in Medford to William and Delores Hanscom. He grew up in Phoenix, Oregon, attending the local schools. He quit school at the age of 15 to support his parents and himself after his fathers logging accident. He owned and operated his own logging company in the early 1960?s.
He served in the Marines during the Vietnam War. After his service in 1971, he moved to Cave Junction where he met his wife Cindy Webb. They were married in 1979, in Reno, NV and made their home in Cave Junction. From 1971 to 1995 he worked performing multiple positions in logging from chasing landing to falling Timber, working for Warren Cook Logging and Bob Nolan Logging. For a short time after 1995 he worked as a custodian for Three Rivers School District until he became disabled.
He was a man who loved the outdoors. He trapped beaver with his father. He enjoyed going to Casey Park in Shady Cove to fish for salmon, and enjoyed and looked forward to the annual elk camp and hunting season with family and close friends. His family meant the world to him and spending time with them was very important. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren. To many of his nephews and nieces he was considered a father figure.
Survivors include his wife Cindy Hanscom, son Steve Hanscom of Medford, Or., daughter Jennifer Hanscom of Cave Junction,5 grandchildren, Gabriel, Kyle, Brandon, Daniel and Elmer; and his stepmother, Gayleen Hanscom of Medford, Or.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
