Donald Ashby Fulk, age 92, passed August 27, 2020 at his home near Cave Junction, Oregon where he has lived most of his life. He was born to Oregon pioneers Ashby and Mary (Payne) Fulk December 8, 1927 at Oakland, California. He began his schooling at the Spence School near the Holland store. He went to school in Smith River, Crescent City, Eureka and Medford when his father was doing carpentry work. As a young man he was a patrol leader of his Boy Scout troupe. Don graduated from Kerby Union High School in 1946. As a teenager he was well known around the Illinois Valley for delivering ice. He also worked on his family farm and as a logger, butcher and bulldozer operator. He was employed 32 years by the Oregon Department of Transportation retiring in 1983 as a superintendent. He married Margaret "Peggy" Monroe on August 26, 1948 at her parent’s ranch on Happy Camp Road. They lived in a house he built there when their three daughters were born. In 1958 they moved to their home on Holland Loop near his parents. Their son was born while they lived there. Don and Peggy were active members of the Shamrock Square Dance Club, Saddle Bums horse club, and St. Matthias Episcopal Church, which he helped build. Don was a 65-year member of Belt Lodge #18 AF & AM Kerby, Oregon. He hunted and fished all his life and went on Elk hunting trips to eastern Oregon with his friends. After his retirement he was an active member and served on the boards of the Illinois Valley Golf Course, the Illinois Valley Senior Center, and Laurel Cemetery Association. He was a supporter of the Kerbyville Museum. He was known by friends and neighbors as a man who could accurately fall a tree and build or fix almost anything. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1988, his parents, and a son-in-law, Gary Orr. He is survived by daughters Mary (Tom) Ewing, Donna (Jack) Fortin and Sarah Orr of Oberlin, Kansas and son Ashby Jack Fulk of Cave Junction, Oregon; and by 7 grandchildren Laura (Dustin) Agan of McCook, Nebraska, Anita (Ian) Reagan, Amy (Kendal) Carman, Angie (Denis) Wangari, Elisabeth (Jonathan) Counter of Oberlin, Kansas, David Orr of McCook, Nebraska and Ashley Fulk of Big Sur, California and 17 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of life service will be held 11:00 AM September 12, 2020 at Illinois Valley Funeral Home, Cave Junction, Oregon.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials may be given in his name to the Historic Laurel Cemetery, Kerbyville Museum, IVHS/KU Alumni Association or Illinois Valley Senior Center.
