Don Slette

May 26, 1928 — October 11, 2008

“Grandpa” Don Slette, age 80, of Central Point, died Saturday, October 11, 2008 at a local adult foster care home.

No services are planned. Final interment will be at a family plot in Yreka, California. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Don was born May 26, 1928 in Challenge, California to Roland & Dorothy Slette. He moved to Central Point from Grants Pass in January 2008.

He was a person that comes along and is never forgotten. If he was asked, he would say he had but a handful of friends, but if you were to walk in his shoes you would find many people who called him friend. It was the small acts of kindness, opening a door, offering a hanky, walking you home, fixing that leaky faucet and just listening. He didn’t judge a person by their past, he took you as you were. He would offer helpful suggestions if asked, but he still let you make your own mistakes and never said “I told you so”. He lived a long life, helping others and never asking for anything in return. He was a self-taught man in a lot of ways. While living in Hawaii, he saw a need for re-upholstering, so he ordered a sewing machine and book and started reading. The first time he tried the book and he didn’t match too well. So, he meticulously took a chair apart and documented how it was put together and from there a business was born. He was a handy-man, helping with decks, shelving, toy chests and just about anything else that could be worked on, he seemed to know a bit about everything. He lived the way he wanted to live, unto his last breath. He was a very private man and never wished to be a burden, he didn’t realize that knowing him, was never a burden. If you remember Don, you will remember the gentle humor, the sometimes surprisingly off beat humor, his love of life, traveling, huevos rancheros, the compassion he had for others, his patience to teach and learn, his never ending note taking, helping others in his quiet way, and always the love and intelligence shining from his blue eyes.

He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles

His hobbies included upholstering, woodworking, traveling and making friends.

Survivors include a sister, Ellen Brown of Brookings, two brothers, Harold Slette of Yreka, California and James Slette of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther; a son, Ed and brothers, Robert Slette and Elvin Rust.
