Dennis Capshaw, a devoted husband, cherished brother, and esteemed veteran, peacefully passed away at his home in Grants Pass, Oregon, on August 28, 2024. He was 76 years old.
Dennis is survived by his beloved wife of 12 years, Annie M. Capshaw, as well as his brothers William Capshaw of Canton, Michigan, and Tom Gardner of Bimfield, Ohio, and his sisters Gail Gardner of Ravenna, Ohio, and Cathy Brogan of Hiram, Ohio. He is preceded in death by his brother Richard Capshaw of Ravenna, Ohio.
Dennis’s journey of service began when he left Crestwood High School during his junior year to join the U.S. Navy in 1965. He dedicated four years to his country, with three of those spent serving in Vietnam, where he manned riverboats in the treacherous waters of the Cua Viet and Perfume Rivers near Hue City. For his bravery under fire, Dennis was awarded the Silver Star, the nation’s third-highest honor for valor.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Dennis trained and became a skilled tool and die maker. However, his commitment to service called him once more, and he rejoined the U.S. Army, where he became Ranger and Airborne qualified. He proudly served on the original Delta Force sniper team before separating from military service due to multiple injuries suffered during deployments to South America and extensive training.
Following his military career, Dennis returned to work as a tool and die maker while also pursuing higher education. He earned a bachelor’s degree in History, Philosophy, and Writing, a testament to his insatiable curiosity and love of learning.
Outside of his professional and military life, Dennis found joy in the great outdoors. He loved camping, reading, and fishing with his wife, Annie. An avid archer and hunter, he cherished stories shared around the campfire with friends and family. He was also a talented artist and craftsman. Dennis was a man of strength and character, a genuine hero whose larger-than-life presence will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Dennis sacrificed his youth to serve his country, and his legacy will endure in the hearts of those who loved and respected him. The family invites you to celebrate his remarkable life and the impact he made during his time with us.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to veteran assistance organizations that honor Dennis’s commitment to those who have served.
Rest in peace, Dennis. Your service and spirit will never be forgotten.
