Della was born May 9, 1939 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada where she enjoyed a great childhood being the youngest of nine children. The family home was on a large parcel of property where they grew a great vegetable garden and learned to cook all the family recipes. Her father was a conductor for Canadian Railways. As a child, Della exercised horses for her brother, Art who is a Canadian championship jockey. All her brothers and sisters kept her busy. In her young teens, Della joined the Royal Canadian Ballet and danced before Queen Elizabeth II. In her late teens, she met, fell in love, and married, Stephen Lecuyer. They immediately started a family and by 1962 had three young daughters. Steve’s success afforded them the chance to immigrate to the United States and moved to California. Della worked for Steve in their insurance company as secretary and partner and years later went to work for Geico. She loved being a mother and watching her girls grow and get married. Della was blessed with two grandchildren, the apple of her eye. In 1999 she moved to Grants Pass with her youngest daughter Heather to join Maureen in this beautiful place. Della worked for Allstate Insurance and Grants Pass Museum of Art. In 2006 she was diagnosed with COPD and CHF. As complications set in, she moved to the Black Oak Foster Care home owned and operated by Heather’s good friends, Kena and Steve Self. With their professionalism, care, and genuine attention to detail, Della stayed happy and healthy for eight years.
Her family will miss her greatly but give their thanks to all the love and care she received. It has left us with a full heart. Thank you to all of you and especially Dr Roberts whose care could never be matched and never will be forgotten.
She was preceded in death by her oldest daughter Laura who was murdered in 1973.
Della is survived by two daughters, Maureen and Heather; two grandchildren, Laura and Ronnie; two great-grandchildren, Trent and Zoey; sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Harry; brother, Gordon; former husband, Steve Lecuyer; and brother-in-law, David Lecuyer.
