Daniel A. Burnakus, age 88, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at Highland House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
A graveside service will be at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
Daniel was born February 5, 1921 in Forest City, Pennsylvania to George & Anna Burneikis. In 1939 he joined the United States Army, was wounded on October 11, 1944 in Italy and discharged from the military in 1947. From 1947 to 1976 he worked for the United States Navy Construction Battalion Center in Port Hueneme, California. On December 18, 1986 in Lake Havasu City, Arizona he married his wife, Stephanie. In 1990 he moved from Lake Havasu City to Grants Pass.
His many memberships included the Church of the Nazarene; American Legion Post #28; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Josephine County Historical Society; 19th Combat Engineers of World War II; and a life member of the National World War II Memorial.
His hobbies included gardening, reading, and traveling.
In addition to his wife, Stephanie Burnakus of Grants Pass; he is survived by three daughters, Diane MacEntee of Rockledge, Florida, Kathy VanZandt of Palmdale, California, and Denise Spagnola of Manhattan Beach, California; a son, David Burnakus of Napa, California; a stepson, Scott Hill of McAlester, Oklahoma; and two grandchildren.
