Charles Lee Hand, age 75, of Merli, died Friday, December 13, 2013 at home surrounded by loved ones.
Charlie was born June 4, 1938 to Otis and Alice Hand in Hammond, Indiana. In 1959 he graduated from California Maritime Academy with a degree as a marine engineer. His work history included Grace Lines, Morton and Cargill Salt companies and Master Conveyor Company, formed with three other partners. Upon retirement he returned to marine engineering, sailing as relief Chief Engineer on various research vessels, most recently for Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
Charlie married his wife Beth in 1975 in Hutchinson, Kansas. They have resided in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Denver, Colorado, and Bow, Washington before moving to Merlin in 1997.
He enjoyed RVing, attending jazz festivals and tinkering on projects. Charlie was a member of the Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society in Lyttelton, New Zealand.
Along with his wife he is survived by a son Mark Hand of Federal Way, Washington, a brother Bob and wife Gerri of Holiday Island, Arkansas and several nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Charlie's wish was that donations be made to Lovejoy Hospice, 939 SE 8th St, Grants Pass, Oregon 97526, in lieu of flowers.
A Celebration of life will be held in late March. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
